Revitalising a Familiar Corner of the North East: New Life to the Former McGovern’s Site
April 3, 2026|News
For nearly two years, the former McGovern’s site stood silent — a once‑familiar corner of the North East building trade left empty, overgrown, and slowly slipping into decline. What had been a busy, respected premises had become an underused shell of its former self, with tired brick buildings, rusting railings, vegetation creeping in, and wide concrete yards lying dormant.
In 2025, Tyneside Home Improvements stepped in with a clear vision: not just to occupy the site, but to bring it back to life.

A Careful Restoration of a Historic Local Site
We are proud of the progress made so far, and although the full revitalisation is still ongoing, the transformation already speaks for itself.
Over the past months, we’ve:
Fully refurbished the office building, creating a clean, modern, welcoming space for staff and customers.
Cleared the entire site, removing years of debris, clutter, and overgrowth.
Refurbished and revitalised the perimeter railings as well as erecting new signage.
These improvements have already changed the feel of the site dramatically. Where there was once deterioration, there is now energy, purpose, and pride.
A Transformation That Respects the Past
The site had been home to McGovern’s, who had traded since 1949, more than 70 years as part of the North East’s building landscape, before eventually standing empty in 2023.
While we are now writing a new chapter here, we remain mindful of that long local history. By keeping the site tied to the construction and home‑improvement industry, we’re helping preserve a familiar part of the area’s story and giving it renewed purpose for years to come.
A Work in Progress — But Already a World Apart
While we’re not finished yet, the difference is unmistakable. The site is no longer a dormant industrial space, it’s now an active, organised, evolving home for our expanding operations.
The coming months will see even more improvements as we complete the final stages of revitalisation. But for now, we’re proud to share the journey so far and excited to continue transforming the site into something the area can be proud of.
