Energy Efficiency Standards for Windows: What You Need to Know

July 15, 2025|News

As a homeowner in the North East, understanding energy efficiency standards for windows and doors is crucial for making informed decisions about your home improvements.

With rising energy costs and increasing environmental awareness, choosing the right windows and doors can significantly impact your comfort, bills, and property value.

What are energy efficiency standards?

Energy efficiency standards are government regulations that set minimum performance requirements for residential buildings and their components. These standards ensure that windows, doors, and other building elements meet specific thermal performance criteria to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

In the UK, these regulations are enforced through Building Regulations Part L, which covers the conservation of fuel and power. The standards apply to new installations and replacement windows in accordance with current legislation, helping homeowners make choices that benefit both their wallets and the environment.

EPC ratings – what the grades mean

Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings measure how energy-efficient your property is on a scale from A to G:

– A-rated: Most efficient (92-100 points) – excellent insulation and low energy costs

– B-rated: Very efficient (81-91 points) – good performance with minimal heat loss

– C-rated: Fairly efficient (69-80 points) – adequate performance for most homes

– D-rated: Average efficiency (55-68 points) – typical for older properties

– E-rated: Below average (39-54 points) – requires improvement

– F-rated: Poor efficiency (21-38 points) – significant heat loss

– G-rated: Very poor (1-20 points) – urgent improvements needed

Your EPC rating directly affects your property’s value and marketability. Properties with higher ratings typically command better prices and are more attractive to potential buyers.

What’s the minimum energy rating for rented properties?

According to the Gov website, since April 2018 rental properties in England and Wales must achieve a minimum EPC rating of E for new tenancies. From April 2020, this requirement extended to all existing tenancies. Landlords cannot legally rent properties with F or G ratings unless they qualify for specific exemptions.

This regulation means that if you’re a landlord, upgrading your windows and doors to meet energy efficiency standards isn’t just beneficial – it’s often a legal requirement. Properties that fail to meet these standards face potential fines and cannot be legally rented.

A-Rated windows & how they can benefit your home

A-rated windows represent the gold standard in energy efficiency, offering numerous benefits for North East homeowners:

Reduced energy bills

A-rated windows can reduce your heating costs compared to older, inefficient windows. Their superior insulation properties keep warm air inside during winter and prevent excessive heat gain in summer.

Improved comfort

These windows eliminate cold spots and draughts, creating a more comfortable living environment throughout your home. The advanced thermal performance means consistent temperatures in every room.

Condensation control

A-rated windows significantly reduce condensation problems, which can lead to mould and damp issues. This is particularly important in the North East’s variable climate.

Noise reduction

The high-performance glazing and frames provide excellent sound insulation, creating a quieter, more peaceful home environment.

Environmental benefits

By reducing your energy consumption, A-rated windows help lower your carbon footprint and contribute to environmental protection.

Property value

Installing A-rated windows can increase your property’s EPC rating and market value, making it more attractive to potential buyers.
